About the Top 2000 Database
What is the Top 2000?
The Top 2000 is an annual music event on Dutch radio station NPO Radio 2, where listeners vote for their favorite songs of all time. Since 1999, the countdown has been broadcast every year between Christmas and New Year's Eve, becoming a beloved Dutch tradition.
This database contains comprehensive data from 27 years (1999-2025) of Top 2000 countdowns, featuring 5,353 unique songs by 2,243 artists, with a total of 54,000 individual rankings.
Data Source
All data is sourced from official NPO Radio 2 Top 2000 countdowns. The database is updated annually after each new countdown is completed.

Project Mission
The Top 2000 Database aims to preserve, analyze, and celebrate nearly three decades of Dutch musical heritage. The goal is to turn raw ranking history into usable context for listeners, researchers, and curious fans.

Data Quality & Editorial Policy
The dataset is maintained with accuracy, consistency, and traceability in mind:
- Source verification against official NPO Radio 2 publications
- Normalization of titles and artist names to reduce duplicate or inconsistent entries
- Manual review of high-impact changes such as new number-one songs or dramatic movers
- Prompt investigation of user-reported corrections
- Transparent methodology reflected in the codebase and project documentation

Primary source: NPO Radio 2 Top 2000 official rankings
Supplementary data: MusicBrainz and Discogs for release years and artist metadata
Methodology: processing, normalization, and calculation logic are maintained as part of the project implementation and documentation.

Update Schedule
Annual updates: new Top 2000 data is added each January after the official countdown concludes.
Current dataset: April 2026, including all editions from 1999 through 2025.
Minor updates: bug fixes, UI improvements, and smaller feature changes are released throughout the year.
